If he would know

We called our shared Spotify playlist “Late Night Loops.” It was a digital sanctuary for our friendship, a collection of tracks that mirrored our lives. Every time Rohan couldn't sleep at 3:00 AM, a new song would appear. And every time he added a romantic ballad, my heart did a dangerous, hopeful little flip.I was hopelessly in love with my best friend.

The worst part wasn't just the crush; it was the mixed signals. Rohan was confusingly sweet. He would hold my hand under the table when he was laughing. He would text me "Goodnight, drive safe" with a heart emoji every single evening, and he constantly told me I was the only person who truly understood him. He treated me like a girlfriend in every way except the title, leaving me floating in a painful, beautiful limbo.

One rainy Tuesday evening, tired of the unspoken tension, I decided to do something incredibly cheesy to finally confess. I spent hours scanning thousands of tracks, meticulously selecting songs based purely on the first letter of their titles. By midnight, the top twelve tracks read as a clear acrostic puzzle:

I Wanna Be Yours – Arctic Monkeys

Always – Daniel Caesar

Make You Feel My Love – Adele

I Like Me Better – Lauv

Night Changes – One Direction

Lover – Taylor Swift

Only One – Kanye West

Volcano – Damien Rice

Everything – Michael Bublé

You Are The Reason – Calum Scott

Ours – Taylor Swift

Unconditionally – Katy Perry

I AM IN LOVE WITH YOU.

I hit save, my chest aching with a mixture of an intense adrenaline rush and deep fear. I didn't get a text message that night, but the next morning, Rohan called me, his voice bursting with excitement. "Hey, meet me at our usual cafe at 4:00 PM. I have a huge surprise for you, and I checked the playlist!" My heart soared. I convinced myself that the mixed signals were finally turning into a real relationship.

At 3:55 PM, I sat at our corner table, tapping my fingers anxiously. The bell above the door chimed, and I looked up, a bright smile spreading across my face as Rohan walked in.

But my smile instantly froze. Rohan wasn’t alone. His fingers were tightly intertwined with a beautiful, stylish girl with a kind smile. He looked happier than I had ever seen him."Hey!" Rohan beamed, pulling her toward our table. "Pia, this is Meera. Meera, this is my absolute best friend in the world, Pia. I told you about her!"Meera smiled warmly, stepping forward to give me a polite hug. "It is so nice to finally meet you, Pia. Rohan talks about you constantly. He says you're like the sister he never had."The sister he never had. The words felt like a physical blow to my chest, knocking the breath entirely out of my lungs."And guess what?" Rohan grinned, pulling out his phone and opening our shared playlist. "Pia made this insane word puzzle on our playlist last night to celebrate! 'I am in love with you.' I showed it to Meera this morning, and she thought it was the cutest way to congratulate us on finally making it official! I told her you always know how to cheer me up."I stared at the glowing phone screen, the coffee shop suddenly feeling entirely devoid of air. All those late-night calls, the hand-holding, the confusingly sweet texts—they weren't mixed signals because he liked me. They were just his way of being friendly. He was so entirely blind to my feelings that he genuinely thought my open love letter was a celebration for his new relationship.

I swallowed the massive, burning lump in my throat and forced the most painful smile of my life onto my face. I looked at Meera, then at Rohan's bright, oblivious eyes."Yeah," I whispered, my voice trembling slightly before I caught my composure. "I just... wanted to make sure you guys knew how much I support you. Congratulations."We sat there for an hour, and I played the perfect best friend, laughing at his jokes and listening to the story of how they met. But inside, the music had completely stopped. I realized then that the most tragic part of a one-sided love isn't the rejection; it's having to smile and clap while the person you love hands their heart to someone else......
